PEFNC celebrates National School Choice Week in Charlotte

Raleigh (January 27, 2020) – Students, parents, teachers, and school leaders will celebrate educational access for all at a National School Choice Week rally in Charlotte on Friday, January 31, running from 10am to 11am at the Discovery Place in uptown. Sponsored by Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina (PEFNC), the state’s leading voice for parental choice in education, the event will include a Student Showcase, highlighting the various talents of students in the greater Charlotte area.

Held every January, National School Choice Week brings together schools, homeschool groups, organizations, and individuals in tens of thousands of independent events and celebrations across the country. The goal is to raise awareness of the different K-12 education options available to families while spotlighting the benefits of school choice. Here in North Carolina, a record-breaking 2,313 events are planned across the state.

“School choice is here to stay in North Carolina,” said PEFNC president Mike Long. “Whether it’s through a strong local public school system, public charter schools, private schools, or home schools, more and more parents are able to pick the right educational setting for their child to excel. And yet our work isn’t done. It won’t be until every child in North Carolina has the opportunity to attend the best school for them. National School Choice Week is all about seeing this goal become a reality.”

North Carolina continues to be a national leader in school choice. The Tar Heel State has three state scholarships designed to help students with special needs, or those from low-income families, attend a private school that better fits their educational needs. Today, more than 14,000 students use Opportunity Scholarships to attend private schools, over 107,000 students attend public charter schools, and upwards of 140,000 children are enrolled in home schools.
