PEFNC Applauds Support for School Choice Expansion in North Carolina

Raleigh, NC – Mike Long, President of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina, released the following statement regarding legislative proposals that would empower more families in North Carolina through school choice and educational options.

Currently, the North Carolina General Assembly as introduced legislation through House Bill 32 and Senate Bill 671 that, among other things, would increase the scholarship amount for students from lower-income households who are awarded Opportunity Scholarships, expand the Opportunity Scholarship Program to reach more families in-need, and provide greater support for families with students with special needs, through the Personal Education Student Accounts.

“Now more than ever, families, parents and students in our state should be empowered through more choices in education, not less. We applaud legislative leaders, who despite the best efforts of Governor Roy Cooper to phase out school choice, continue to push ahead doing the work of the people of North Carolina, who overwhelming support parents and families’ right to choose the school that is the best fit for their child, regardless of zip code or income,” said Mike Long, President of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina.

“The Opportunity Scholarship Program has been ‘life-changing’ for families across our state. Those are their words when describing this program that--for the first time ever--has given many equal access to the school of their choice. We should be celebrating this program, and North Carolina’s special needs scholarships, and exploring, through proposals like HB32 and S671, ways to empower even more families with school choice options across our great state.”
