For over 40 years, Mike has taught and trained in public school systems, private and parochial schools, churches, and youth organizations across America.
As Mike explains, “I have witnessed an increase in families exploring their educational choice options, and I am encouraged by the growth of charter and private schools dedicated to excellence in academics, athletics, fine arts, and the special needs of children. It has been exciting to see a free educational marketplace providing expanded educational options for parents. We must continue to promote quality educational choice options, whether that be at the traditional public school or by way of an alternative educational environment.”
Mike joined Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina in 2018 to provide all parents and families the same freedom to choose a school, public or private, which best meets the needs of their children. Mike believes, “that giving parents and families the freedom to choose empowers them and communities while fostering excellence in education across the board.”
Mike comes to PEFNC after leading Carmel Christian School as its Head of School in Charlotte and Fellowship Christian School in North Atlanta. He has more than 40 years of experience as a middle school teacher, an AP US History teacher, a high school principal and a Head of School. Mike is also one of the pioneers of abstinence education in America having trained over 60,000 educators in “directive teaching” and spoken to over 1 million teens on the virtues of respect, responsibility, maturity, discipline, and character.
Producer of the nationally acclaimed “Everyone Is NOT Doing It” video series and author of two books, Mike has a long track record of professional communications and branding experience. He has also worked to successfully lobby the NC General Assembly and US Congress for his advocacy and education issues.
Mike and wife Libby are native North Carolinians. Mike was born and raised in Durham, educated in the Durham Public School System, and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. He also has a Masters in Christian School Administration from Southeastern Theological Seminary. Libby is from Greensboro and graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh. Both are the parents of two grown children, son Garrett (and his wife Morgan) who resides in Raleigh, and daughter Caroline (and her husband Brantley Attaway) who resides in Milledgeville, GA. Mike and Libby are the proud grandparents of four grandsons!
