2011 has already been dubbed the "year of school choice" thanks to a number of successful parental school choice efforts across the country, including North Carolina eliminating its public charter school cap and creating a tax credit for families of children with disabilities.

Study shows Florida tax credit program linked to increased student achievement

A new study from the National Economic Research Bureau found that students who particpated in the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program have had improvements in reading and mathematics, relative to students who applied for the program but remained in public schools. The study, released in August, is based on an analysis of 2009-10 achievement data.

Real help for children with disabilities

Chapel Hill mother Wendy Katsiagianis is not out to destroy public education.

Her 13-year-son is deaf and has ADHD, among other challenges. She supports House Bill 344 (Tax Credits for Children with Disabilities) because it will help with the hundreds of dollars she pays per month to provide services her son needs.

Op-ed : Parents' motives easy to understand
