School Spotlight: Zion Christian Academy, Roxboro

Zion Christian Academy, located in Roxboro, NC, was founded in 2002 by Zion Christian Center Pastors Danny and Teresa Johnson. Since its founding, the Academy has remained committed to providing the highest level of quality education serving kindergarten through the 12th grade. Zion Christian Academy mission is to offer an alternative to basic education by assisting parents in the development and maturation of their child’s spirit, mind and body through a wholesome Christian education.

Zion Christian serves 43 students, with a student-teacher ratio of only 8 to 1. A combination of A Beka and ACE curriculums are used for Biblical instruction, reading, spelling, English, Spanish, math, science, social studies and other subjects  for  purposes of establishing a solid educational foundation necessary for success. Many courses are tailored to student interests such as auto mechanics, home economics, and public speaking. Students also participate in daily classroom devotionals and weekly Chapel services. Qualified teachers with diverse backgrounds and educational experience provide uniquely creative approaches in their instructional techniques.

Known for its unique ability to reach students from various racial and economic backgrounds, Zion Christian Academy has educated students from all over Person County, as well as the state of Virginia. In addition, Zion Christian Academy is certified to serve non-immigrants with student visas, and has taught students from Vietnam, Nigeria, and Canada.

Edith Serrano, Assistant Administrator at the Academy, has two children attending 2nd grade at Zion Christian.  Both children are learning at the 4th grade level and reading at a 7th grade level.

“Students perform well above national percentiles at this school” says Serrano.

She believes this is due to the fact that students of the Academy have less test-taking anxiety, more self confidence, and are well prepared for the real world. In addition to its strong academic achievements, the school has been the Central Carolina Conference basketball Champions for the past two years.
According to Cheryl Jones, Principal of Zion Christian Academy, 98% of Zion Christian’s graduating students go onto to post secondary education.

That is a statistic that all North Carolinians can stand behind.
