School Spotlight: L&L Montessori School, Southport

"The concept of an education centered upon the care of the living being alters all previous ideas. Resting no longer on a curriculum, or a timetable, education must conform to the facts of human life." - The Absorbent Mind

Advocates of the Montessori school philosophy say that it is a method of seeing children as they really are and creating environments which foster the fulfillment of their highest potential as members of society.

Montessori schools can be found in every city and country around the world. While the schools share commonalities, each school is unique in its approach to education. An excellent example of the diversity of Montessori schools is Lucas & Lucas Montessori School (L&L) in Southport, NC.

L&L Montessori School is equipped with countless educational activities that have been carefully selected by the teaching staff. The student to teacher ratio is an eye-popping 7:1 and 75% of the faculty has an advanced degree.

The curriculum at L&L offers a well rounded program in which the children can discover learning at their own individual rate. Children are encouraged through specific tasks to develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration and independence.  The program also involves small and large group activities, which include music, singing, arts and crafts, dance, Spanish and Sign Language. The school reports that the majority of its students test above grade level and are recognized for being courteous and well behaved.

As one of eight non-public schools in Brunswick County, NC, the L&L Montessori School is the only Montessori School in the area. With non-public school choices limited, L&L remains a viable alternative source of education for children, producing students with an excellent mastery of basic skills and advanced knowledge.

My children attend this school and we are amazed at the rate at which children have the ability to absorb information. Even at the age of three, the children get exposure to language, mathematics, geography, and science. The children have a zest for learning that I have not seen in their peers from traditional public schools. The work that PEFNC is doing to encourage choices in education is important, and I hope more families have the opportunity to choose the best educational environment for their own children. I am extremely pleased with my choice and would love to have some of my tax dollars working for me.
