School Spotlight: The Brookstone Schools, Charlotte
As we reported last August, more parents than ever are choosing to educate in North Carolina's nonpublic schools. When you consider what private schools have been able to accomplish, it’s no wonder. The Brookstone Schools in Charlotte is a perfect example.
Brookstone serves K-5 students from low-income, urban neighborhoods in the Charlotte area and has been highlighted for its successes by the Charlotte Observer and Charlotte-area public radio in recent months. The school has grown its enrollment to 85 students and recently moved into a larger facility at Christ Presbyterian Church.
How is Brookstone giving families a choice? According to the radio report, fully 100% of Brookstone’s students are on some sort of scholarship. The report notes that tuition is charged on a sliding scale, with most parents paying on the lower end and private donors and corporate sponsors making up the difference. Remarkably, most students score two or three levels above their grade level by the time they leave elementary school.
Through the Herculean efforts of teachers, staff and founders at Brookstone, the school has been able to achieve amazing things with students who would have fallen through the cracks elsewhere. Although the tests scores speak for themselves, we urge you take a virtual tour and see firsthand the difference being made in students' lives.
