Parental School Choice for Social Justice

Last week PEFNC was featured in The Winston-Salem Journal in a guest column titled "School choice movement can be tool for social justice."

The column was particularly relevant in light of an educational report released this spring, which revealed that African American students in North Carolina are being suspended at a staggering rate.

In Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, for instance, black males receive short-term suspensions at nearly four times the rate of white males.

We'll be exploring this issue along with North Carolina's academic achievement gap in the days to come. Stay tuned...

I have grave concerns about this particular issue, I think that the African-American community in the Greater Winston-Salem community has to grapple with the reality that many of our young black males are posturing themselves to be targets of the racial disparities that persists in our society as a whole. We must help to prepare them better to be able to understand whats at issue here in their lives individually and in society in general. Also, we must be able to have real conversation with the entire community(ies) so that we all understand that this is all of our issue together. We all need to take ownership and have a part in this conversation. The "saga" continues!
