Tutors for Wayne County Kids

Wayne County Commissioner Jack Best is being pretty outspoken about what he sees as an administratively top-heavy school system in Goldsboro. Instead of taking up space in the schools for administrative offices, Wayne County Schools could put administrative staff to work as tutors, under Best’s plan.

"If they have got that many administrative people and that many guidance counselors, utilize part of their time to get the young kids on the right track," Best said.

The recommendation may have been tongue-in-cheek, but Commissioner Best cites compelling statistics from Wayne Community College. Of the Wayne County public school graduates enrolled at the community college, 62 percent have to take remedial reading and math.

That's pretty striking evidence of the need for greater quality educational options in Wayne County.
